    Where did the name suggestion Bana Gindarja Creek come from?

    Bana Gindarja – (pronounced Bana Gyyn-dah-jah) is from Yidiny vocabulary, Bana meaning water and Gindarja meaning Cassowary. The Department of Resources received the suggestion from Cairns Regional Council, made on behalf of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Traditional Owner group.

    What engagement with Traditional Owners has taken place?

    The suggestion made by Cairns Regional Council follows consultation by the council with the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Land, namely the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji who were unanimous in their desire to have the watercourse renamed.

    Where is the creek located?

    The creek extends from Dinden National Park in the south-west of Cairns and passes through the localities of Edmonton and Bentley Park before connecting to Smiths Creek in the east.
