What does the proposal include?
The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development is considering a proposal to remove the approved locality name of Kairabah and amend the boundary of Yarrabilba to include the current locality of Kairabah.
Where did the name suggestion come from?
On 31 October 2023, Lendlease Communities (Yarrabilba) Pty Ltd requested to discontinue the locality name Kairabah and amalgamate this area into the existing locality of Yarrabilba. The proposal seeks to avoid confusion for residents, businesses, and emergency services by proposing a single suburb name across the whole Yarrabilba development footprint.
What would be the change impact of residents and businesses in the area?
There are currently no residents or businesses within the locality of Kairabah. Making the proposed change before development starts within this area allows future residents and businesses to be allocated an address that will not require changing.
How will I know if the proposal is approved?
If you would like to receive notification of the decision via email, you may request one through your submission.

How are places named?
Consistent and accurate place names are the basis of a number of vital activities, including map production, communication services, population censuses and statistics, postal addresses, and emergency and postal services.
Because of this, Queensland follows strict place naming guidelines and processes. Place naming is primarily the responsibility of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development which administers the Place Names Act 1994.

Place Names can also play an important role in the recognition of Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander People’s culture and history. Many places across Queensland are derived from First Nations languages.
Where do the names Yarrabilba and Kairabah come from?
The name Yarrabilba is derived from the Bundjalung language (Yugumbir dialect), indicating place of song.
Kairabah (pronounced "care-a-bar") means "Place of White Cockatoo" and is derived from the Yugambeh language.
Why should I get involved?
Your feedback helps the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development to ensure that any change will reflect the expectation of interested parties.
