Double Island is located between Cairns and Port Douglas within the Great Barrier Reef marine park. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and reefs, the 18-hectare island was once an exclusive resort.

The island is now under the management of the Queensland Government. Work is underway to make the island safe and ready for revitalisation.

While we do that, we want to hear from you.

Share your great ideas for the future use of Double Island to support a sustainable and thriving regional tourism economy.

    Hi there,

We’re really glad you asked this question because Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a deep and important connection to our land and waters. And while we acknowledge the significance of this relationship to Country, there is no current native title claim over Double Island.  If one is made under the Federal system, the state is automatically a party to the proceedings, and the Department will work through the process.

I’d just like to add that native title recognises rights that have always been held through traditional lores and customs. It doesn’t affect private home ownership or public access and use of beaches. For other land types, if native title is recognised, it doesn’t automatically mean that land can or can’t be accessed. I invite you to understand more about what native title means in Queensland here https://www.qld.gov.au/firstnations/environment-land-use-native-title/what-it-means-for-queensland

Is there going to be a public jetty?

Alan asked about 1 month ago

The jetty and boardwalk formed part of the former resort and are not operational and unsafe. To ensure public safety, access is not permitted

Can people visit the old resort?

For the time being, all public access to the former resort area is prohibited. Work is underway to make the island safe and ready for revitalisation. This is a critical first step. During this time, we appreciate your understanding and patience.
