Update: Public consultation has now closed, and a decision has been made.

Decision: To create and name a new locality of Keswick Island, as shown on Decision Plan QPN1421.

The Honourable Dale Last MP, Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Minister for Manufacturing and Minister for Regional and Rural Development has made a decision on a proposal to create and name a new locality of Keswick Island.

Keswick Island is located approximately 33 km north-east of the city of Mackay, within the Cumberland Islands group. Keswick Island is the approved name of the geographical feature under the Place Names Act 1994 (the Act), however the island is currently not located within an official locality.

Localities – often known as suburbs – are administrative boundaries that are essential for the creation of valid addresses that can be uniquely and clearly identified.

The proposal was suggested by Mackay Regional Council, after the issue was raised by residents of Keswsick Island.
